Measures to Deal with the Impact of Wind Disasters on Wheat after Sowing

From April 11th to 12th, extreme strong winds occurred throughout our city. Some plots in the main wheat producing areas were severely affected, with exposed seeds and damaged drip irrigation facilities. To effectively respond to the disaster and reduce losses, the following technical measures are proposed.

Response measures for lightly affected land parcels

1. Rapid soil cover and seed conservation

For plots with relatively light disasters and partially exposed seeds in the fields, but still in rows, it is recommended to promptly organize manual or mechanical soil covering treatment with a thickness of 2-3 centimeters. Priority should be given to using compaction equipment to compact the soil and prevent secondary wind erosion.

2. Drip irrigation tape recycling and repair

Inspect the fields along the wind direction, pick up scattered drip irrigation tapes, and check for any damage. Minor damage can be repaired with specialized tape, while severe damage requires replacement with a new pipe. Drip irrigation tapes that have not been blown away in the field should be immediately covered with soil and secured with ground nails or sandbags.

3.Timely drip irrigation

After the repair of the drip irrigation system, it is necessary to drip water in a timely manner to ensure that the seeds absorb water and germinate, while effectively fixing the seeds and drip irrigation tape to avoid secondary wind erosion. For some plots with severe damage to drip irrigation belts that are difficult to recover in the short term, it is recommended to temporarily switch to sprinkler irrigation or pipe irrigation to ensure the necessary water for seed germination.

Response measures for severely affected land parcels

For severely affected areas with large areas of exposed seeds and severely damaged drip irrigation systems, considering that the suitable sowing period for wheat has passed, it is recommended to re cultivate the land and plant other crops such as corn and sunflowers. Before soil preparation and sowing, wheat seeds scattered in the field should be picked up as much as possible to reduce their retention in the field. In addition, after the emergence of new crops, it is recommended to use herbicides that are safe for new crops and effective for wheat for field closure treatment, in order to minimize the adverse effects on wheat seedlings.
